What NATE Certification is and Why it Matters

November 08, 2016

Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning in Roanoke always talks about how our service techs are NATE-certified, and while it sounds comforting, what does it really mean?

NATE is an abbreviation for North American Technician Excellence and, according to their website, is the nation’s largest certification organization for HVAC (heating, ventilation, air conditioning) and refrigeration technicians. The organization was developed nearly 20 years ago and is supported by the entire HVAC and refrigeration industry but not all technicians in the industry are required to be NATE-certified. The certification is discretionary and technicians can work in the heating, cooling, ventilation, and refrigeration industry without being NATE-certified.

It’s important to Service Experts that our technicians are NATE-certified to ensure we are sending the most qualified and skilled technicians into your home. To make sure professionals meet these standards, the NATE-certification tests validate real-world working knowledge of HVACR systems for technicians. The exams are knowledge-based tests that assess the technician’s knowledge of these subjects.

Since Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning focuses on the HVAC side of NATE-certification (not refrigeration), there are only particular areas applicable to our technicians. NATE assessment candidates may receive installation and/or service certification in one or more of the specialty areas listed below:

  • Air Conditioning
