Adil Karamally Receives Joe Groh Foundation Grant

July 09, 2016

The Joseph Groh Foundation is a wonderful organization that offers financial support to people in the construction trade who endured life-altering injuries. Each year the association honors various recipients with a grant and this year the Joseph Groh Foundation was delighted to present Adil Karamally as a recipient.

Adil, originally from Pakistan, received his MBA from the University of Chicago and 13 years ago purchased ProStar Mechanical Services of Anaheim, CA and received his HVAC and general contracting license. Ten years later, Adil suffered a severe stroke at only 48 years old. He lost the use of his left arm and the stroke left his left leg majorly impaired, leaving Adil with foot drop. Because he could only walk while using a heavy brace, his muscles began to degenerate and his doctors were concerned that he would eventually be permanently in a wheelchair.

Because the stroke left him unable to work, Adil’s wife, Laila, was their single source of income, resulting in financial strain on the couple with a young child in elementary and three more children in college. Their hopes were lifted when Adil was introduced to the WalkAid System, a device that utilizes functional electrical stimulation to help people in Adil’s situation walk again. However, Adil and Laila soon learned that they could not afford the equipment in addition to the intensive rehab that Adil would need so he could figure out how to use it.

Luckily, a specialist at WalkAid referred Adil and Laila to the Joseph Groh Foundation and, thanks to the incredible grant, Adil obtained the WalkAid System and has been overjoyed at the success. His muscle is no longer indicating atrophy and is actually starting to regenerate, bringing hope back to Adil and Laila.
