The Ban on R22 Refrigerant

R-22 Refrigerant Phasing Out

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) determined that R-22 refrigerant (also known as the brand FREON®), a common refrigerant for residential heat pumps and air conditioning systems, is harmful to the environment. The EPA is regulating the production and use of refrigerants and in the future all air conditioning and heat pump refrigerants that contain chlorine will be eliminated.

What does this mean for you?

If your home has a heating and air conditioning system that uses R-22 refrigerant, you do not necessarily have to panic or run out to purchase a new system. Production of R-22 refrigerant is winding down, and while the cost will go up, production will go on until 2020. At that point recycled refrigerants should be obtainable for a while.

As a result of the change, Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning in Roanoke offers R410A, a more environmentally friendly solution for refrigerants which will reduce the damage to the ozone layer. Up to half of home energy costs may go toward heating and cooling the home. At Service Experts, our experts are committed to offering you products that are less taxing on the environment while meeting your desire for a comfortable heating and cooling system.
